Why should I believe in God or Jesus?

The main reason to believe in God is Jesus, but there are a whole lot of other reasons, also.  First, why we should believe in Jesus.

Jesus Christ, the Foundation

I believe that Jesus Christ is the foundation of everything I believe as a Christian and that He should be the primary focus of Christians in everything that they do, including presenting the gospel.

It is clear that the Apostles felt the same way.  As they traveled spreading the gospel, it was Jesus that they preached, not religion, philosophy or science.  Their message was the reality of Jesus Christ- His sinless life, atoning death and bodily resurection.  Of course their was much more than these three things, but those were the basis of their faith as described in the Acts and the rest of the New Testament.

Skeptics and critics will try to turn the question of Jesus Christ aside with all sorts of questions and objections.  However, few of these are really difficulties if you first consider the question of Jesus Christ.  If Jesus Christ was real, and He was who He claimed to be, and He was who His disciples said He was, many of the other questions are easily answered or become of little importance.  The question which Jesus put forward, the question which the apostles put forward, the question which every human heart needs to answer is "What will you do with Jesus Christ?"

Jesus himself said, "He that believes on me has everlasting life" (John 6:47) and, "I am the way, the truth and the life:  no man cometh unto the Father, but by me" (John 14:6).  Peter and John "preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead" (Acts 4:2), Philip preached Jesus (Acts 8:35).  Paul said to the religious people of his day, the Jews, "Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins:  And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses" (Acts 13:38-39).  When the Apostle Paul encountered philosophers, "he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection" (Acts 17:18).  No matter who you meet, no matter what their backround or objections, you can preach Jesus to them.  Christians need to be careful to avoid undue preoccupation with intellectual distractions and details and be sure to bring the person of Jesus Christ to every lost sinner. It is Jesus that each one will answer to at the judgement (Phillipians 2:9-11).  We should be trying to reach the conscience of the sinner with the truth of Jesus Christ, and be ready to be a fool for Christ's sake so that He gets the glory and not us (I Cor. 4:10).  It is easy to bring glory to ourselves by delving into intellectual questions and making our goal to be winning arguments instead of bringing the light of Jesus to bear on the conscience. However, we need to be aware of one of the distinguishing features of Jesus Christ and the story of the bible that is different from all other religions of the world: the story of Jesus and the Bible is firmly rooted in historical fact. True Christianity is not just a philosophy that has no connection to the real world or a mere collection of fanciful or mythical stories for moral instruction. All of it is intricately connected with real historical places, events and people and are corroborated by external evidence. This was critical to the disciples and should be critical for us. Peter said "we have not followed cunningly devised fables... but were eyewitnesses" (II Peter 1:16). They didn't try to convert the world to a new philosophy or morality- they had seen a man, who claimed to be God, raise from the dead and they were preaching Him and His message to all nations.

Why Believe in Jesus Christ?

Based on the testimony we have from the authors of the Bible, who was Jesus? What was He like? Who did He claim to be? Were His claims true? Was He a Liar? Was He a Lunatic? Was He a Legend? Was He more than just an extraordinary man? Why should we believe in Him?

Here's a number of reasons to believe in Jesus Christ:

1) His amazing teaching- its authority, ring of truth

He surpasses the law (Matt. 5-7, sermon on the mount, Jn. 1)

He spoke with authority (Matt. 7, Luke)

Jesus' moral teachings are recognized as immpecable not only by christians but by countless non-christians of nearly every religious backround.

2) His amazing sinless life- his followers and enemies proclaim it

Jesus followers counted Him as sinless- an extraordinary acknowledgement coming from those who knew Him best. Usually those who know us best also know our faults better than anyone; but the followers of Jesus said He had no sin. And not only His followers, but even those who hated Him struggled to make a false claim that even appeared to have merit. In the end, they condemned Him for claiming to be who He was- the King of the Jews, the Messiah, and God. Those who saw Jesus in his last hours acknowledged there was no fault in Him.

3) His amazing miracles- his enemies couldn't deny them, they were more than trickery

Feeding 5000 people with a few loaves and fishes is a bit more than a clever magic trick. Likewise, Jesus raised a man from the dead who was enbalmed and laid to rest for days- not a question here of just reviving a person from a coma.

4) His amazing love and grace

5) His amazing claims- claimed to be Messiah, the Son of God, the Son of Man, the Only Way to God, God Himself

The claims Jesus made about who He was were remarkable to say the least. In view of these claims, any reasonable person is forced to conclude Jesus was either  1) insane  2) an incredible con artist or  3) actually who He said He was. For a discussion of His claims to be God see "Is Jesus God?". For His claims to be the Messiah (Christ), see "Did Jesus Claim to be the Messiah?" Additionally, Jesus claimed to be the one and only way for anyone to know God or get to heaven.

6) His resurrection from the dead

7) His amazing fulfillment of prophecies

There are at least 322 Messianic prophecies in the Old Testament. All were fulfilled by Jesus.  Listed below are 61 of the Old Testament prophecies and the record of their fulfillment in the New Testament:
